Artist Statement

In the 19th century Monet, Degas and others developed and refined Impressionism, an entirely new way to render painted images. In the 20th century Ansel Adams developed the Zone System, a new way to manipulate photographic images for artistic interpretation. Those two systems of visual artistic expression are very broadly based and widely applicable.

The original techniques I create are more limited and specific, but like Impressionism and the Zone System involve original methods for rendering artistic images: new methods of expression and interpretation. Some of these innovations are new techniques in creating images, some involve original applications for materials or processes, and others involve innovations on existing techniques.

When I began creating fine art photographic images about twenty years ago I rapidly came to the conclusion that there was no point to just repeating the established techniques. If I was going to create images it seemed far more worthwhile and satisfying to explore new territory and advance the entire art form into new methods of expression.

I was also determined that I did not simply want to create images that were responsive to the latest political or social fads. So I purposefully have chosen to create images based on traditional subjects but rendered with original techniques.
