Traditional or Photojournalism

Today there are two differing approaches to professional wedding photography.

With the traditional approach the photography is very much a part of the wedding day: some shots are posed, formal group pictures are carefully organized, the photographer is almost a part of the wedding party and there is a lot of 'smiling for the camera.' The result is many images which look posed, but are well composed and have a very finished, professional look.

With wedding photojournalism the photography is less obviously a part of the wedding day and the photographer works more unobtrusively: there are few or no posed pictures and little 'smiling for the camera,' organizing formal group pictures is dispensed with, and the photographer influences events less. The photographer records the day's activities candidly and inconspicuously. The result is images with a rougher edge, but un-posed and very natural.

Donald R. Douglas over many years of wedding photography experience has developed a professional style which includes elements of both of these approaches: doing all the traditional shots along with a great deal of candid and unexpected work.

The bride and groom (and other principal decision-makers) should discuss what approach they would like for the photography of the wedding day. Is a combination of these two styles best for you? Would you prefer to have all of the photography handled in the more casual photojournalism style? Do you like a more formal and traditional approach? With Don Douglas Photography you can be assured of the highest quality professional images whether you choose either of these styles exclusively or a pleasant combination of the two.
